About this work

Description

High master of Manchester grammar school 1859-1876 and of St Paul's School, London, 1876-1905. Portrayed as described in the Oxford dictionary of national biography, as a man of "fearless and truculent individualism, rather unkempt appearance, occasional devastating rudeness, and idiosyncratic reserve"; the Oxford dictionary of national biography also implies that he is described in a novel by one of his pupils (Ernest Raymond in Mr Olim) as follows: "He was a short man with a large, sometimes soup-stained beard. He smelt of cigar smoke. He would 'bellow in a paralysing bass', seize boys by the ear, sit down on the bench beside them, pushing them aside, and (according to Raymond) roar: "Can't you recognise a Past Unfulfilled Protasis when you see one? If you can't, go to some school where they put up with work like this.'"". Portrayed smoking a cigar in a cigar holder
