Biographical note

The author was an eminent paediatrician, who qualified in Paris in 1887. He became 'Médecin des Hôpitaux' in 1892, and was elected to the Académie de Médecine in 1914. In the same year he became the first professor of infant hygiene, a post which he held till 1928 when he retired. He was elected to an honorary fellowship of the Royal Society of Medicine in 1934 [cf. B.M.J. 1942, ii, p. 175].
