About this work
Description
Janus was a Roman god of transitions, he had functions pertaining to birth and to journeys and exchange, and was concerned with travelling, trading and shipping. He was often represented with two heads. Kandel is known to have produced illustrations to Sebastian Munster's 'Cosmographia' which was first published in 1544. A similar illustration appeared on page numbered 178 in the 1550-1552 edition facing the section: 'De Genua civitate Liguriae ...'. It is unclear which edition Kandel's version appeared in. There were several editions published in Latin in 1550 Basel, 1552, 1554, 1559, and 1572. There are 3 other impressions of Kandel's print in the British Museum, refs 1872,0511.1199, 1850,1014.983 and 1850,1014.984. Munster's Cosmographia was an influential book that attempted to describe the history of the world across all human history and analyse its constituent elements of geography, history, ethnography, zoology and botany through the eyes of a sixteenth century scholar in Basel.
