Henry Solomon Wellcome (1853-1936): patents

A collection of twenty-eight printed patents issued to Henry Wellcome for a variety of inventions, chiefly for products or processes that would have been used by the firm Burroughs Wellcome.

The patents (detailed below) move, broadly speaking, from medical manufacturing techniques (including the "tabloid" process for compressing precise dosages of drugs into robust tablets that played a major part in Burroughs Wellcome's success) and general inventions in the earlier years to a focus specifically on pharmaceutical chemistry in the latter years:

1901: Improvements in the preparation of surgical and other bandages, cotton wool, lint and similar articles

1906: Manufacture of a new salicylic acid derivative

1907: Manufacture of new compounds containing chlorine from methylene ethers of pyrocatechol derivatives

1907: A method of packing rolled surgical dressings

1907: Improvements in and connected with the packing of gauze or other dressing

1907: Improvements in apparatus for containing and injecting serums or other substances

1907: Improvements in the photographic processes of toning and intensifying

1908: Manufacture of new therapeutic compounds

1908: Manufacture of cyclic carbonates of halogen derivatives of ethyl and propyl 3, 4-dihydroxybenzene

1908: Manufacture of a new therapeutic compound
