Anthony Highmore - Covering letter sent from Ely Place, London, to an unamed recipient (probably John Todhunter) from Anthony Highmore, with extracts (dated 22 December) from the half yearly general court of the Governors of the Smallpox Hospital relating to St. Pancras, and the estate of John Relph (who in his turn had been the executor of the estate of Edward Archer) and its executors Cuthbert Relph and John Todhunter, 23 December 1815.

W. Kittoe - Letter from W. Kittoe, sent from Wareham, Dorset, to R. Craven, in Hull, regarding a remedy he has sent for a Mr. Martin that R. Craven is treating for various ailments, 6 December 1824.

Letters from Sir James Murray and Robert Power, along with engraving of Martin van Butchell purchased from JLM Gulley, and added to collection February 2014 (acc.2046)

Biographical note

Bracegirdle, Richard (fl. 1644-1660), possibly a relative of Roger Bracegirdle (d. 1610), a medic of Oxford.

Pershowse, Richard (d. 1650), of Reynold's Hall, Walsall. The Pershowse family held Reynold's Hall and associated property for several generations. Richard succeeded to the estate on his father's death in 1636, but his property was sequestered for deliquency in 1648.

Brown, John (fl. 1679-1680), merchant.

Yonge, Sir Walter (1653-1731), 3rd Bart. 1670. Succeeded to his father's estates when young and had a career as a Member of Parliament (1679-1681, 1689-1710) for Honiton and Ashuburton, as well as a Customs Commissioner ((1694-1701, 1714-1731). Married his first wife in 1677 (she died 1679) and had a daughter who, if living, would have been at least 14 at the time of this letter. Married his second wife, Gwen Williams, in 1691 and had four children, one of whom was (William Yonge) date of birth is c.1693.

Marie Jérôme Éon, Comte de Cély (1734-1817), soldier and engraver. After a long military career, he became Lieutenant General in 1791, but refused this advancement and emigrated. He served with royalists in 1792 and 1795-1797, returning to France in 1814, although this letter appears to date from after this.

Osborn, Sir George (1742-1818), 4th Bart. 1753. He was left the manor of Chicksands in Campton, Befordshire on the death of his father. His second wife was Lady Heneage Finch (daughter of Daniel Finch, 7th Earl of Winchilsea); she died 1820.

Sullivan, Eliza - daughter of Sir R.J. Sullivan, 1st Bart. 1804, and Indian merchant (1752-1806).

Highmore, Anthony (1758-1829), solicitor and legal writer.

Archer, Edward (d. 1789), M.D. Studied in Edinburgh and Leyden becoming doctor of medicine in 1746. He was elected physician to the Smallpox Hospital in 1747, and was admitted a licentiate of the College of Physicians in 1752. He was interested in improving practice in small-pox and in inoculations. After becoming ill, he died at the Smallpox Hospital, where he had asked to be taken, in 1789.

Relph, John (d. 1804), M.D. Graduated as a doctor at Leyden in 1788, became a licentiate of the College of Physicians in 1784, and was elected physician to Guy's hospital in 1789.

Kittoe, W. (fl. 1824), surgeon in Dorset.

Craven, R. (fl. 1824), surgeon in Hull.

Hoffman, Louisa S. (fl. 1837).

Stuart, Hugh L. (fl. 1820-1837), army doctor. Served at the Cape of Good Hope, Bengal, Mauritius and the Seychelles between 1820 and 1837.

Stuart, John (1780-1847), trader and explorer. Joined the North West Company in America in 1796 which later merged with the Hudson's Bay Company, of which Stuart was made a chief factor in 1821.

Murray, Sir James (1788-1871), physician. Discoverer of milk of magnesia and pioneer of synthetic fertilizers.

Bailey, William (fl. 1848), wholesale chemist and druggist.

Power, Robert (fl. 1824), surgeon.

van Butchell, Martin (1735-1814), dentist and pupil of Dr William Hunter. Famously had his wife embalmed and displayed her body in the window of his home (and practice) to attract customers.
