Charles Knyvett the elder (1752-1822) or one of his sons, Charles the younger (1773-1852) or William (1779-1856). All three were professional musicians. A different portrait of a younger man also byThomson after Wivell, in the opposite direction, is in the National Portrait Gallery, London: it has manuscript lettering identifying it as a portrait of [Charles] "Knyvett jr.", which suggests that the present portrait is likely to show Charles Knyvett the elder.
