    1- because, being of an inflammatory character, it has a tendency to alter the structure of the canal; for, although it appears to be entirely confined to the membrane, yet when we con- sider the intimate connexion subsisting be- tween it and the part it covers, we may reasonably conclude that both are affected by the inflammation. When the first stage has subsided, it is probable that gonoiThoea leaves behind it a chronic form of inflammation, which is peculiarly favourable to that depo- sition of lymph and thickening of the parts which is the cause of the canal being after- wards permanently narrowed. This seems to be exemplified by the circumstances attending gleet, for it frequently happens that when this discharge has continued for a considerable time, it is kept up in consequence of the formation of a stricture. During the time I was house-surgeon to St. Bartholomew's Hos- pital, and in my own practice since, I have had frequent opportunities of examining pa- tients who have been suffering from a gleet of one or two years' standing, and all the remedies Used had been ineffectual.
