Frank Gehry: shaping public spheres.

Documentary presented by architecture critic Jonathan Glancey, who looks at the new public buildings that are being built around Britain and the influence of architect Frank Gehry (who designed the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao). The buildings include the Millenium Galleries and Winter Garden in Sheffield, The Forum in Norwich, the renovated Kingsdale School in London, the Bedsted (sp?) estate in Sutton, and the Maggie's Cancer Care Trust Centre in Dundee, currently under construction and designed by Frank Gehry. The programme illustrates the importance of light and space in well-being in public buildings and homes. The PFI plan, where a private company builds a public building and then is repaid for it over a span of 25 years is mentioned. The government is said to be wary of spending money on public buildings after the Millenium Dome gobbled up 530 million pounds of public money with disappointing results.
