About this work

Description

This memoir describes the career of a male nurse who entered the profession just after World War II at a time when nursing was not normally considered a masculine occupation. George Hirst trained at Castle Hill Hospital, the tuberculosis sanatorium at Cottingham, and at the Kingston General Hospital, Hull. Following the completion of his training he was recruited to the local District Nursing service. In 1961 he obtained a new post as district nurse in Grimsby where he worked until his retirement in 1988. His memoir describes the various different wards and departments of the hospitals he trained in and the kinds of work he undertook when 'on the district'.

There is also a photograph of Hirst "on Theatre duty", 16 May 1952
