    The deaths were 61 in number, made up of 40 males and 21 The Deaths, females. The rate, calculated on the average number resident, gives a percentage of 14. This is the highest rate of mortality which has occurred since 1875. No less than 40 of these deaths were due to the “coarse lesions” of the brain referred to in a previous paragraph; while “natural decay” carried otf 5 more. As in the previous year the deaths were comparatively few, it may be assumed that many cases were “tided over” into this year. The two years afford a mortality amounting to about 11 per cent. Three inquests were held; one on an epileptic woman who inquests, was found dead in bed during the night. The verdict of the Coroner’s jury was to the effect that she died from epilepsy. The other two were men, who died from exhaustion after mania. The average age at death was 45 years. Table IX., appended, shows in detail the causes of death, and is so modified, in accordance with the revised Tables of the Medico-Psychological Association, as to show at the same time the ages at death in quinquennial periods. Table XII. is also modified so as to show, in addition to the The Residuum, form of mental disorder in the admissions, discharges, and deaths, the form of mental disorder affecting those remaining at the end of the year. This supplants the special Table em¬ bodied in my Peport of the previous year so far as the “form of disease” goes, but it is necessary to supplement it by saying that the curable cases remaining are: Males, 11 ; females, 12; total, 23. In the men’s division there are still seven empty beds ; but it is only in consequence of the high death-rate
