    Dear John, I enclose a paper for your consideration entitled The general structure of the chromosomes of higher organisms. This is the paper I mentioned on the phone. I have tried desperately to write the fuller paper, but it is clearly going to be far too long for Nature and I need much more time to write it properly. Although I said nothing to anyone (except Sydney) till 18th August the rumour that I am working on this problem has spread rapidly. Several people have already sent me their reprints for consideration and Pontecorvo (whom I have not seen recently) has invited me to a meeting next year on this subject! I am therefore anxious to get something into print rapidly. Hence the present paper. I apologize for the form of the paper, especially that the legends to the figures are as long as the main body of the paper, but I am con vinced this is the appropriate way to present it. I KH§irÍHÍÉá myself with the thought that you usually put the legends in small print, but Sydney has suggested to me that in this case you break your rule and print them in the size used in the text to make for easier reading^since so many important points are contained in them. I leave this to your discretion. The few remaining footnotes have been incorporated in the references and I would be grateful if you would leave them this way. The references themselves have been kept to an absolute minimum. May I ask that your sub-editors do not tinker too much with the paper. For example the reference to Vogel has been written as F. Vogel. This is because, when I first heard of this paper, I assumed it was by my old friend Henry Vogel, whereas it is in fact some totally obscure anthropologist in Germany.
