Thomas John Barnardo (1845-1905), philanthropist and founder of Dr Barnardo's Homes, born in Dublin he became a convert to revival evangelism and moved to London in 1866 in preparation for missionary work. He enrolled in London Hospital in 1867 and in 1868 established the East End Juvenile Mission. Barnardo was acknowledged as the largest and fastest growing mission in London thanks to publications, such as the Children's Treasury (1874) and constant expansion and new schemes such as the cottage-home system for destitute girls and the emigration of children.
