    coughing, walking against the wind; how affected at meals, whether before, during or after them, if not immediate, in how many hours. Also what is ob- servable when masticating, swallowing, drinking. Also what is singular before, during or after stools, urinating, menstruation &c, what are the effects of men- tal and sensual irritations, passions, solitude, society &c, as also the influence of certain aliments such as: pork, goose, duck, fat, pastry, veal, oysters etc., and the usual stimulants: coffee, tea, tobacco, wine, spirits, beer, &c. In addition to an accurate description of the place, the kind and the condition of the several symptoms, their connexion also must be attended to, whether they appear simultaneously or in succession; but on this subject the Physician versed in Physiology and Pathology, will require no instruction. It is of consequence, that the symptoms collected be properly arranged; this may be done as they are written down or may lie disposed in the Physician's mind. The most important will be distinguished; but we do not mean those, which are important in the view of the Pathologist; these are frequently very obscure, indistinct, and difficult to discriminate, still to him they are of great significance. They serve to indicate the class and the genus, but not the species, and therefore assist but little, in the choice of a suitable remedy; consequently a large number of remedies will always be open to his choice. If the entire group of symptoms (or in other words: the image of the disease) is looked over, there will immediately appear many, of which the patient partic- ulary complained, while others were noticed as of comparatively little impor- tance. On a question of this sort the Pathologist thinks often differently from the patient. Those symptoms, which from their intensity are most important to the sufferer, are sometimes but of minor consequence to the Pathologist, while, those which the patient considered of little importance, may be differently estimated by the Pathologist. A judicious Homceopathist will pay a due regard to both these arrangements, without following either the one, or the other exclusively. He will consider those symptoms of the first importance, which are the most evidently characteristic that is, those which are the most definite as to place, kind, and especially con- dition. If these several symptoms thus accurately defined, be in a peculiar con- nexion with others, then will they hold the highest relative importance. Again, if there are other symptoms, which by a similar process, are similarly characterized then the relative importance of these, must be decided upon pathologically, or in accordance with the feelings of the patient; but should both these agree, which is not a rare occurrence, then is the symptom of first rate importance.
