    PREFACK. Tue following work is written, partly for the profession, partly for the public. The subject has created, and deservedly, an ardent spirit of enquiry, that will not easily be appeased. Although clearness in its exposition has been aimed at as much as possible; yet, to the unprofes- sional reader, the scientific details neces- sary to understand the rationale of the cure, may seem somewhat abstruse. To such, however, the reward of mastery— namely, A FIRM FAITH, FOUNDED ON A CONVINCED UNDERSTANDING, will amply recompense the labour of acquisition.
