Human mutants. Part 3, The meaning of beauty.

The last in a three-part series in which biologist Armand Leroi discovers how studying congenital abnormalities can reveal new information about human development. This part is about our superficial appearance, focusing in particular on skin and hair. We look at historically famous albinos and piebalds and meet present day albinos as they are photographed by Rick Guidotti who specialises in depicting people with genetic disorders. We also meet a circus performer with hypertrichosis (excess facial hair) and scientist Angela M. Christiano describes how hair mutations might occur. The programme also looks at racial stereotypes and more general stereotypes of beauty and we meet Saira Mohan, chosen by a group of American newspapers as the universal image of beauty.
