About this work

Description

Second of three programmes looking at parasite encounters. We meet a variety of people whose bodies have been invaded by parasites and follow them through their hospital treatments. Demi Moss and her family were on holiday in Ghana when she was attacked by a parasitic African Tumbu fly which implanted its eggs in her neck. We see her having the 6cm maggot extracted. In the USA Jonathan Bardon caught malaria even though he'd never been abroad and malaria was thought to have been eradicated for years in the US. Jenny Anderson became ill after a trip to Bolivia where she was bitten by a sandfly; she had been infected with leishmaniasis (a flesh-eating parasite). We follow her progress in hospital and we hear about African Trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness).
