Biographical note

The Institute sponsored the writing of this history of district nursing, published in 1960, to celebrate the centenary of William Rathbone's district nursing project in Liverpool. After approaches to various authors, it was agreed that the history should be written by Mary Stocks, former principal of Westifield College. Records at the Institute were sorted, material was collected or borrowed from the heirs of the founders (mainly members of the Rathbone family) and notes and transcriptions made of material held elsewhere
