About this work

Description

The second in a four-part series of programmes looking at the origins of life and the way in which our increasing understanding of genetics might affect this in the future. This part focuses on the way our behaviour can be affected by our genetic structure. At ATR Bassingbourne, Cambridgeshire, new army recruits take part in a study to discover whether their success or failure in training can be related to their genetic makeup. The results of the study show that the ACE gene in particular does seem to affect human performance. The programme goes on to discuss genetically inherited diseases such as Achondroplasia. The programme contains film of DNA in a test tube and of bacteria replicating, graphics to illustrate fertilisation and how genes copy themselves, film clips of Francis Crick and film of the inside of the heart.
