About this work

Description

Using excerpts from the play The Gift, the video explains the project of which the play was a part. The whole project consisted of the play - which toured the country - a workshop and a teacher's pack designed not only to educate secondary schoolchildren but to enable them to relate the importance of genetic science to their own lives. Prof. Bernadette Modell (University College, London) is impressed at the amount of information which can be conveyed through drama. Teachers' and students' comments show that this is a successful way of getting young people to consider how they would approach the problems raised by genetic diagnosis. The Gift was written in 1995 for the Y Touring theatre company by Nicola Baldwin, who also appears in this video, and commissioned by the Wellcome Centre for Medical Science.
