    58, New Broad Street, E.C., 2nd March, 1882. To His Royal Highness the President, To THE Treasurer, AND The Governors of St. Bartholomew s Hospital. May it Please Your Royal Highness, Mr. Treasurer, My Lords and Gentlemen, I beg most respectfully to offer myself a candidate for the vacant post of Assistant-Surgeon at your Hospital. In 1864 I entered at the University of Cambridge, where I took my Bachelor of Arts degree, with Mathematical Honours in 1868, and subsequently the degrees of Master of Arts, Bachelor of I.aws, and Bachelor of Medicine. In May, 1876, I was admitted a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of England. On leaving the University, where I had devoted two years to professional studies under Professor Humphry, at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, I became a Student at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, where the greater part of my time has been almost continuously occupied for the past twelve years. In your Hospital I have, during more than two years, successively held the offices of House Surgeon and House Physician, and was awarded the House Surgeon’s Prize. In the Medical School I held appointments on the Teaching Staff for upwards of five years, first as Demonstrator of Physiology, and subse- quently as Assistant Demonstrator of Anatomy, and have also from time to time taken the duties of the Assistant-Surgeons.
