    AUTHOR’S PREFACE. In publishing a work upon the different methods of I exploring the chest, I have not pretended to add to I what has been written upon each of these modes of in¬ vestigation ; I have only aimed at collecting the obser¬ vations scattered among a number of works, and by as¬ sembling all that has been written upon the subject, to [{demonstrate that, taken collectively, they give allpossi¬ ble certainty to the diagnosis of the numerous and varied affections of the chest, while separately they are insufficient, and sometimes even calculated to lead lus into error as to the seat and nature of the disease. ( I have had little to do to attain my proposed aim. ilThe materials were prepared ; it only remained for me to assemble and class them in order. I am much in¬ debted to the Traite de Semeiologie of Professor Lan- drais Beauvais, to the translation of Avenbrugger, by Corvisart, and above all to the excellent work of Pro- essor Laennec, upon Mediate Auscultation. However, I have stated nothing which I have not had many opportunities of verifying upon numerous patients submitted to my observation during seven years’ resi¬ dence in the hospitals of Paris, under the direction of practitioners as wise, as they are well informed.
