The Essay on “ The Turks in their Relation to Europe was first published under the title of Lectures onthe History of the Turks by the Author of Loss and Gain, in 1854. As is well known, Newman took what was then the unpopular side. The Czar was “ attack- ing an infamous power, the enemy of God and Man ”. “ Many things are possible; one is inconceivable—that the Turks should, as an existing nation, accept of modern civilisa- tion ; and in default of it, that they should be able to stand their ground amid the encroachments of Russia, the interested and contemptuous patronage of Europe, and the hatred of their subject populations.” Personal and Literary Character of Cicero.
