    children bom in 1959 (5-year-old age group), 1957 (7-year-old age group) and 1953 (11-year-old age group). In addition there were also tested special cases referred from medical inspections and other sources, and retests were carried out on children reported as de- fective from last audiometric tests. Any 1959, 1957 and 1953 age group children were included with their respective age groups and not in the “retest” group. Altogether 7,179 children were tested and details are given in Table XII. During the year 33 children were referred to the Aurist for special investigation. The Aurist’s findings were as follows: Eustachian disfunction Polypus Both drums indrawn Tonsils and adenoids enlarged Extensive wax Defect of little or no severity (no treatment necessary) Thickening of right antrum Old otorrhoea Other defects 3 1 1 12 4 1 1 1 3 27 Failed to keep appointments 2 Awaiting appointment 4 33 Treatments recommended were as follows: Operative treatment 17 Syringing and general cleansing 4 No action necessary at this time (but observe) .... 3 Hearing Aid 3 27 Hitherto there has been difficulty with regard to certain children who required special hearing aids because they suffered from high frequency deafness. These aids have hitherto not been available under the National Health Service, but as the result of special arrange- ments made through the co-operation of the Regional Hospital Board it is now possible to have appropriate aids supplied.
