About this work

Description

Poster, printed in black on yellow paper, advertising the appearance of 17 year old Lalloo Ramparsad, born with the legs and arms of his twin sister as part of his own body, at the Portland Hall, Langham Place, London, in the late 1880s. Lalloo was also known as the Double-Backed Hindoo Boy. The poster was printed by W. Willson, at the New Walk Printing Works, Leicester. The "fair" in question is probably the Nottingham Goose Fair in October 1887 where Lalloo had also been exhibited (according to a note on the British Library's copy). He seems to have been born as Lalloo Ramparsad in Oudh, India, the 2nd of 4 children and earned large sums of money touring in circuses and freak shows. He was married in Philadelphia in 1894, and died in Mexico about 1908. His birth date is given as 1874 elsewhere, which is 4 years later than this poster would indicate.
