About this work

Description

The life cycle of the bee goes through 4 stages: egg, larva, pupa, adult. This image is a false-coloured SEM of a bee pupa just before the sixth and final moult (shedding of its outer skin). At the end of the pupa stage, the bee emerges as an adult having completed its transformation (metamorphosis). The bee is 8 mm in size.
