Biographical note

Alfred Henry Garrod (1846-1879), zoologist, was the eldest child of Sir Alfred Baring Garrod FRCP. He was educated at University College London, Kings College London, and St John's College, Cambridge, studying medicine and the natural sciences. In 1873 he became the first natural scientist to be made a fellow of St John's College.

In June 1871 Garrod became prosector to the Zoological Society, working in the dissecting room of the zoological gardens at Regent's Park, and becoming particularly interested in the anatomy of birds. In 1874 he became professor of comparative anatomy at King's College, London, and in 1875 was appointed professor of physiology at the Royal Institution. HIs career was cut short by illness and he died of tuberculosis aged 33.
