Segment 1 The patient's history is given by intertitles, and the patient is shown. His goitre and eyes are seen close up to show the effects of the hyperthyroidism. The results of his electrocardiogram are also shown. The patient is anaesthetised. An incision is made in the neck. The jugular veins are ligatured. Segment 2 The thyroid gland is exposed. The blood vessels surrounding the thyroid are secured. The lobes of the thyroid gland are exposed and excised, with intertitles explaining the steps of the procedure. Almost the whole of the thyroid gland is removed. The resulting cavity is inspected.
