![Peeitonitis.—From TrepiTebu to stretch all round, terminal -zY'is,—Inflammation of the serous membrane lining the cavity of the abdomen, Pekityphlit]S.—From irepi around, tv^\6s blind, terminal ■itia.—Inflammation of the areolar tissue which connects the psoas and iliacus muscles with the ctecum. See Appendicitis. Petechia.—From peicchio a flea-bite.—A small red or purf)lish spot, in shape and colour similar to a flea-bite, and due to subcutaneous htemorrhage. Phagocytosis {<pdyw, I eat, and kvtos, a cell).—A term expressing the property possessed by certain animal cells, called phagocytes, of taking into their substance solid particles, which may either be rejected or used by the cell for its nutrition, or, when the solid mass is living, may destroy the cell. Photophobia.—From <pQs light, ^6/3os fear.—Aversion to and intolerance of light.—Found in certain stages of meningitis, in measles, typhus, and many diseases of the eye. Phthisis.—From (pdiio to pine or waste away.—Progressive emaciation. Consumption of the lungs. Decline. Pleurisy, or Pleuritis.—From irXevpd the side, terminal -itis.—Inflammation of the serous membrane which lines the walls of the chest, and is reflected upon each lung. Pleurodynia.—From TrXevpd the side, ddvvT] pain.—Pain seated in the walls of the chest, and ordinarily in the intercostal nerves. Pleximeter.—From irXTjcrau to stride, fiirpov a measure.— An ivory plate used in mediate percussion of the chest. Pneumonia.—From irvevfiovla a disease of the lungs.—Acute inflammation of the substance of the lung. Pneumothorax.—From Trvedfxa air, dujpa^ the chest.—A collection of air in the pleural cavit}'. If serum also present, Hydropneumothorax ; if eS'usion purulent. Pyopneumothorax. Podagra.—From ttovs the foot, &ypa seizure.—Gout situated in the joints of the foot. Prophylactic.—From irpd before, tpvXdffaw to avoid.—The preventive treatment of disease. Prurigo.—From prurio to itch.—A papular eruption, at- tended with severe itching. Psoriasis.—From \p(hpa itch, mange.—A disease of the skin characterised by patches of rough scales. Ptosis.—From Trrbu to fall.—A falling of or inability to raise the upper eyelid. Puerperal.—From jwc?- a child, pario to bring forth.—Re- lating to women recently delivered. Purpura.—From iropcpipa the purple fish.—Purple spots and patches on the skin from extravasation, due to a morbid condition of the blood and capillary vessels.
