    2 A.D. 1850.—N° 13,293. Pascal's Improved Apparatus for the Cure of SmoJcy Chimneys, §c. the same to be enrolled in Her said Majesty’s High Court of Chancery within six calendar months next and immediately after the date of the said in part recited Letters Patent, that then the said Letters Patent, and all liberties and advantages whatsoever thereby granted, should utterly cease, determine, and become void, any thing therein-before contained to the contrary thereof in 5 any wise notwithstanding, as, reference being thereunto had, will more fully and at large appear. NOW KNOW YE, that in compliance with the said proviso, I, the said Jean Louis Pascal, do hereby declare the nature of my said Invention, and in what manner the same is to be performed, to be particularly described and 10 ascertained in and by the following statement, and the Figures and Drawings therein referred to. The apparatus shewn in the accompanying Drawings has been devised and arranged for the purpose of preventing the smoking of chimnies, and of ventila¬ tion, by producing an upward draft of air in the chimney or shaft communi- 15 eating with the apartment to be ventilated. This apparatus consists of an outer tube or case placed over or around the tube, within which the smoke ascends, or by which the room is to be ventilated. Between this inner and outer tube, at the lower part of the latter, are placed certain inclined and curved plates or pieces of metal connecting the two tubes together, and arranged so 20 that the wind or current of external air striking upon them will be reflected, and cause an upward current between the two tubes. Above the inner tube is placed a fan capable of revolving about an axis, and with three or four plates or vanes arranged in such manner as that the ascending current of rarified or heated air, or the current pushed between the external and internal tubes, or 25 the two currents combined, may cause the fan to rotate about its axis, and act as an exhauster, and thus improve the draft of a chimney above which it may be placed, or ventilate any apartment or place into which the inner tube may lead. The whole may be surmounted by a cowl or hord of the ordinary con¬ struction, and poised so as to turn about and protect the upper part of the outer 30 tube in the usual manner, according to the direction of the wind. The annexed Drawing shews the general arrangement and proportion of the parts, which may be varied according to the size of the chimney, or the pecu¬ liarity of the situation in which the apparatus is employed. Having now described the nature of the said Invention, and in what manner 35 the same is to be performed, I wish it to be understood that I am aware of a screw or screws having been placed within chimney tubes at or near the tops thereof, but such have not answered in practice.
