    Mr. President, My Lords, and Gentlemen, a In offering myself to your attention, I have an introductory duty to perform. I have to acknowledge the honour of having been invited to address the Royal School of Medicine and Surgery, upon the return of its Anniversary. In making b these acknowledgments, I cannot hut feel, that there are many circumstances, some relating to persons and some to things, some connected with the origin and early history of your Institution, and some with its present prosperity and reputa- ction, which, whilst they largely add to the honour, add in an equal degree to the difficulty, of the office which I have undertaken. If I were to refer to the printed evidences of your past exertions, I should find a variety of facts and events, all bear- Ding witness to the intellectual labours, which have conducted you to the distinguished position you now hold among the recognized Schools of profes¬ sional science in this country; but at the same time proving, that the duties, which I have been e called upon to discharge, are as arduous as they are honourable.
