About this work

Description

Published engraving contained in a chapter on eyes

In the text accompanying the published engraving, Lavater writes that it is "impossible not to love so good a physionomy, even though our religious principles should preserve an aversion to Arminianism". The face has a phlegmatico-melancholic look and "suffers with patience". A footnote comments that Micrefeldt and Ravenstein have both executed portraits of Uitenbogart, and that the Ravenstein is in the collection of Lavater's brother-in-law
