About this work
Description
A militia camp was formed at Coxheath near Maidstone in 1778 as part of the defences against the French and as a centre for recruits. A similar print entitled 'A gross adjutant' by Bunbury (?) under the pseudonym of 'Coxheath' was published on 10 November (BM Satire no. 5511) which is believed to be a caricature of Captain Francis Grose, captain and adjutant of the Surrey militia from 1778
