Preliminary Examination. — The first step of the intending student who has determined on qualifying for the Medical Profession, is to pass what is known as the Preliminary Examination. This is a test of moderate proficiency in the arts pertaining to a liberal educa- tion ; and those who have been designed for the pursuit of a scientific calling may be presumed to be already prepared for it. The supposi- tion, nevertheless, is not uniformly borne out by the event; and, of the various avenues opened up towards the portals of medical study, by no means all the candidates are capable of adopting the most desirable. The student, however, who is sufficiently prepared should certainly take the London Matriculation, even though he may not intend to go on to the University Doctorate; for, should he subsequently wish for it, the obstacle of general education will have been removed from his path.
