S, A hatched circle marks an individual for whom presence or absence of characteristic cannot be asserted. á, marks a deformity, or disease, or special characteristic, which may possibly be associated with that under consideration. (3^ Descent lines without parents, mark that the individuals were offspring of the same parents, but there is no record or knowledge of these parents. ó Я This arrangement marks a marriage with ignorance as to whether there were or were not offspring. The roman figures refer to the generation, the arabic to the individual in that particular generation; thus IV. 13 in the description refers to the thirteenth in¬ dividual in the fourth generation and he or she can be at once identified in the pedigree. Other symbols are employed in dealing with special classes of characteristics, but they wiU be found defined on the special plates and hold only for those plates.
