    From the Preface to the First Fdition. This Manual is intended to supply a want I have long felt in my capacity as a teacher of clinical medicine, viz., an introduction to the study of disease of the upper air passages that might serve as a practical guide to students and practitioners, and as a stepping stone to the larger and more comprehensive works, whose very wealth of detail render them less suitable for beo-inners Illustration is essential in describing affections, the diagnosis of which largely depends on the appearances presented, and, with few exceptions' I have reproduced sketches from my clinical notes, believing that they will convey the most accurate idea of the aspects of disease, without elaboration. I am under a sense of deep obligation to Dr. McB ride, and Mr, Young J. Pentland, for per- mission to reproduce Fig. j, Piute IV. \ to Professors Chiari, Emil Zuckerkandl, Dr. Riehl, of Vienna, and to M.
