Description

Journal of a voyage as ship's surgeon on the emigrant ship Star sailing from New Ross, Co. Wexford, to Quebec 29 April to 13 June 1853; with observations on subsequent travels in Upper and Lower Canada. Canada Both journal and observations include medical detail.

The observations include comments on local events, scenes, cities, and Indians; also on national and local government, defences, economics and commerce, land ownership, topography, climate, education, and ecclesiastical organisation.

Biographical note

Macdonagh, elected FRCS in 1873, was educated at Trinity College Dublin and in London, entered the Cunard Company's service as surgeon, served as civil surgeon in the Crimea, and become a well known general practitioner in Hampstead (London) active in local affairs.
