    Cure. If the patient be pretty full of blood, and his pulfe tolerably ftrong, it will then be prudent and ufefulto take away half a pint or more of blood. A bliltcr fliould be laid over the part, a dofe of caftor oil, or of iifteen grains of jalap and as much cream of tartar, mould be given to open his bowels: if the pain continues, fome proper fweating medicine mould be given, as four grains of camphor beat up with honey into a bolus, to which two grains of ipecacuana may be added, this much mould be taken every three or four hours, warning it down with feneca make root tea, or warm bauin tea : or in the place of thefe a tea-fpoon- ful of paregoric and twenty drops of antimonial wine, may be taken every three hours; ufing plenty of warm tea in the intervals. This laft mixture will be pro- per for the cough, taken in the fame quantity and times. CHAP. XVII. INFLAMMATION OF THE STOMACH. /^SlUSES. External violence, high feafoned food, acrid medicine or poifons ; hard bodies fwallowed, as ofglafsorflone ; cold drink, when the body is heat- ed ; diftenfion from an over quantity of food that is of difficult digeftion ; inflammations of the adjacent parts extending to the ftomach : befides thefe cauies, a trans- lation of affection in other diforders are caufes; as in the gout, fmallpox, mealies, St. Anthony's fire ; but thefe require a treatment connected with the primary affection, which cannot be treated of here. Symptoms. A violent, pungent, and fometimes throbbing pain at the pit of the llomach, with burn- ing and painful vomiting ; a hiccough, anxiety and difficult breathing ; great weaknefs ; after taking any fling into the ftomach, the pain increafes, and it is dilcharged by vomiting : the pulfe is commonly fmall, hard and quick.
