"Dr. Spalding began in 1800 [i. e. 1801] to collect and tabulate all deaths occurring in Portsmouth. His first Bill of mortality ... showing ... the number of inhabitants, deaths, age, disease, and causes of death, was printed in 1801 [i. e. 1802] and continued for eleven years during which period they were sent to prominent personages in the United States and in Europe" - J.
