    for, at the age of twelve, bare-footed, ill- clad, and with almost no school-training, “ one month only, without his parents’ allowance, bestowed upon the Latin,” and sent to herd sheep upon the hills about Abernethy, he contrived, like the younger Scaliger, to acquire a knowledge of Greek without the aid of Grammar or Lexicon ; and after carrying a pack, keeping a school, contending with ecclesiastical bigots who accused him of getting his learning from the Devil! and, it is said, serving as a soldier of the volunteers in the rebellion of 1745, fought his way into the ministry of the Secession Church, and finally into the Professor’s chair of Divinity. The other two John Browns, his father and grandfather, were both men of mark in their day.
