    THE YEAR’S WORK. The Board again express their warm appreciation of the services rendered by the Honorary Medical and Surgical Staff. A hearty welcome is extended to those newly appointed : Mr. H. B. Levy and Mr. D. A. Sanford, formerly temporary Assistant Surgeons, as Surgeons, and Mr. J. M. H. Ross, Mr. J. A. Weir and Mr. T. G. Lowden, as Assistant Surgeons. The pleasure which the Board feel in referring to additions to the staff, is, however, tinged with regret at the retirement of Dr. Z. M. H. Ross, Mr. W. Grant Waugh and Dr. G. S. Robinson. Their long years of active and distinguished service have added greatly to the hospital’s reputation and they have now been appointed Honorary Consulting Surgeons. The Board wish to testify to the great value of the services of Dr. Ross who, beyond his normal retiring date, continued to discharge his duties until younger men could be secured. Mr. Waugh has agreed to continue his surgical work until Mr. Sanford’s return from the Forces. Members of the staff continue to receive honourable recognition from the profession and it is with pleasure that the Board record the election of Dr. A. A. M. Nicol as a Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians. He is the first physician in the history of the Royal Infirmary to achieve this distinction. To cope with the increased work of the Pathological Department, Dr. J. F. Wilson, M.D., B.Sc., who has had special experience in bacteriology, was appointed at the end of the year to assist Dr. H. A. Cookson. A new bio-chemical laboratory has also been opened within the Department and Dr. J. Harkness, M.B., B.Sc., has been appointed Bio-chemist. This addition will enable valuable work to be undertaken in relation to the metabolic diseases and many other conditions. The post of Medical Officer in charge of the Physio-Therapy and Re¬ habilitation Department, to which reference was made in the last annual report, has been filled by the appointment of Dr. I. C. Cowan. It is the first appointment of its kind to be made in any hospital in the counties of Durham and Northumberland. To extend the service of the Fracture Clinic to meet the demands of the heavy industries in this area, it was decided to appoint an Assistant Orthopaedic Surgeon and Mr. E. W. Knowles, F.R.C.S. (Ed.), was selected for this post. Since the end of the year, Mr. Knowles has been called to the Forces but will rejoin the staff on completion of his military duties and, in the meantime, a deputy has been appointed.
