Description

Receipt book of Jane Freestone, 1843. Culinary, cosmetic, household and medical recipes, mingled together, with index at end. Written in a number of different hands, and some cuttings and manuscript items pasted in. Several recipes attributed and dated.

Culinary material includes a number of wine and brewing recipes (e.g. Mrs Heasley's mead wine, p 12).

Numerous medical recipes, mostly for common ailments and first aid, with some invalid cooking, but including "For cholera", p 59, and pasted in cutting "The cholera" p 161.

Cosmetic items include "To make cold cream", p 6. "For the hair", p 52, "Honey soap", p 54 , "Lip salve", p 70, "For the hair, a lotion", p 130.

Household tips include "Mamma's: To clean carpets and woollen goods", p 12, "For a scent jar", pp 30-31 ("Rebecca's August 8th 1844 Strukley Vicarage"), "To make blacking" p 36, "For cleaning furniture", "For cleaning tins", p 60, "To make ink", "Oil for furniture", p 65, "Universal cement", p 66, "Moths", p 82, "For cleaning brasses, tins, etc", p 99.

Also some knitting patterns and directions for netting baskets, pp 164-170.
