Description

The man studying in the foreground is very similar to a Pharisee in a large painting of Christ among the doctors, by Jusepe Ribera. One version of Ribera's painting, today in Vienna, was in the collection of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm (1614-1662), Governor of the Spanish Netherlands, whose collection of paintings was curated and published by David Teniers the younger, designer of this composition in which the Pharisee has become an alchemist
