About this work
Description
Monochrome photographs of fifteen children born with limb defects in the Grimsby area, 1985-1994. Organised by patient. For a copy of Smithells' report, Enquiry into an apparent cluster of babies born with limb defects in Grimsby, 1994, see PP/SML/E/2/3.
Each year about 3000 babies were born in Grimsby Maternity Hospital. In the nine-year period 1985-1993 babies born with limb defects (underdevelopment of one or more limbs) numbered between zero and three annually. Five such babies were born in 1994, prompting an enquiry into the apparent cluster. As a paediatrician with long-standing clinical and research interests in birth defects, Smithells was invited to consult. At the time, he was Emeritus Professor of Paediatrics at the University of Leeds, and Director of the International Centre for Borth Defects, Rome, Italy.
