    33i business and social interest, mingling with the people in all their lawful undertakings. In this he only imi- tated his Divine Master. All this tended to promote bodily health and human happiness. Pastors not only often lose their influence over their parishioners, by failing to cherish and cultivate those amenities and courtesies of common life which all should practise, but they utterly fail to ingratiate themselves into the favor and friendship of others around them; and, consequently, they do not draw in the multitude, that might be induced to attend upon their public min- istrations, if they pursued a different course. The clerical recluse is but poorly qualified to gain the hearts of an unbelieving community. They see him only in the pulpit. They hear him only upon solemn subjects, and behold him only with a sedate, or possibly, frown- ing countenance, and associate him with what is un- pleasant and irksome, having no tendency to promote innocent social enjoyment and health. Let him come into their families and stores, and business matters, and show them that he has a heart to feel, and a mind to comprehend, and a tongue to express, his views and feelings upon every-day life, and a new phase will come over the people who formerly stood aloof from all his instructions.
