About this work

Description

Postcard showing Lionel der Löwenmensch or Lionel the Lion Faced Boy as he was known in English. Born in Poland in 1890 as Stephan Bibrowsky, he suffered from Hypertrichosis. He is shown here in exotic costume, reading, reclining on the ground his right elbow resting on a rock, with a studio set of a lake behind him and plants to either side. This postcard would probably have been sold as a souvenir at places where Lionel was exhibited as part of a freak or variety show.
