Biographical note

Botanist and Horticulturist , born Catton, Norwich; assistant librarian to Sir Joseph Banks; F.L.S and F.G.S., 1820; F.R.S., 1828; professor of botany at the University of London, 1829-60; lecturer on botany to the Apothecaries company, 1836-53; his chief work was The Vegetable Kingdom, 1846.
