Earl Talbot stands behind a fire screen armed with a spit and a pot lid in an attempt to defend himself from John Wilkes who is armed with a pen and an ink-bottle. Etching with etched verse below, 1762.

Earl Talbot was then Lord steward of the household. He is attended on the right by Tobias Smollett who is dressed in highland attire. Supporting Wilkes on the left is the Rev. Charles Churchill who holds a copy of 'The North Briton', the political paper that he and Wilkes set up as a rival to Smollett's 'Briton'. Wilkes had ridiculed the excessive flattery that Talbot paid George III during his coronation in 1760. In response, Talbot challenged Wilkes to a bloodless duel on Bagshot Heath
