    It has been thought expedient that the Friends of the Patients should] be .informed of the circum¬ stances, under which their Visits to the Asylum may be proper, i The following memorandum, founded on an extract from the Physicians’ Journal, places this matter in a clear light, and is subjoined to the Medical Report sent quarterly to the/riends of the Patients with their accounts « The means of cure in Insanity very mainly “ depend on the removal of the Patient to a “ totally new scene, and from known persons “ and known objects, with quiet exercise in the « open air in mild weather, regular habits, and „ strickattention to the general health. « On the other hand, the occasional visit of a “ person to whom the patient has been much “ attached, has been found (notwithstanding “ some instances to the contrary ) to produce a “ striking good effect, where no peculiar Delu- « sion of the Patient is connected with the party “ visiting. Such Visits, about once or twice in “ a quarter, are therefore encouraged. In all « visits of friends, they should be cautious not to “ stay too long/after their presence has ceased “’to awaken the1 interest and attention of the “ Patient. The friends should listen to the u Patient rather [than address him, and nevei « converse on the subject of the Delusion.
