    INTRODUCTION. T H E purpofe here is to lay down an arrange¬ ment of Foffils $ founded on their obvious cha¬ racters, and fenlible qualities: according to which they may be known, and dilpofed in method •, without the {kill of Chemiftry, or the fatigue of experiments: without furnaces, or aqua fortis. Thofe arts and inftruments may be needful to afcertain their nature; but we are here employed only on their outward form, and character : the other part of the fci- ence, which is indeed the moft effential, will follow the more eafily : for things, before they are deeply examined, ought firft to be known. In this method nothing will be admitted as an article of diftinction, but what is to be perceived at once, by the fight, fmell, tafte, or touch.
