Description

The Marquess of Londonderry had a reputation for being a High Tory who used his influence to promote Tory interests in the election of members of Parliament. It was thus a surprise when a vacancy for an M.P. in the city of Durham in August 1843 was filled by the Radical and violent member of the Anti-Corn Law League, John Bright
